Caring for a loved one from the sidelines can be confusing. You don’t want to overreact, but you also don’t want to wait until something goes wrong.

Almost 40% of the population aged 65 or more now require some form of help with their daily tasks. And this number is only going to increase.

If you’ve got that uneasy feeling in your gut and are wondering if you should get home-based care for them, here are the signs you need to watch out for.

    • Their Home Is Starting to Look Neglected

You walk into their house, and something just feels different. The dishes keep piling up, the trash hasn’t been thrown out, and there’s expired food in the fridge. This is more than just aging. It’s a sign that your loved one is struggling to perform even simple tasks.

When basic chores become overwhelming, it’s a silent call that they require some form of home care services to handle their needs. These include cleaning the dishes, taking out the trash, folding their clothes, and reminding them to take their medication.

Sometimes, older adults feel alone, too, which can spiral them into depression. But this way, they’ll have someone to talk to as well, even if you’re busy completing your projects.

    • They’ve Had a Fall or a Close Call

Do you know falls can be the primary cause of injury for adults over 65? And every year, over 14 million older adults face the same fate, as per the CDC.

If your loved one has fallen recently or had a bruise they couldn’t explain, it’s time to start thinking about their long-term safety. Remember, even a simple trip over the rug can turn into a broken hip or worse.

    • They Keep Forgetting the Important Stuff

Being forgetful sometimes is part of who we are. However, at an old age, this can become a significant and persistent problem due to declining mental capacity.

They might start mixing up the meds, which is dangerous, or they might miss regular checkups or forget how to even use the microwave. All these things indicate that they require more than just occasional visits from you.

If you’re someone busy and can’t take the time to care for them, consider healthcare services with 24 7 care at home nurses or helpers.

    • You’re Seeing Sudden Personality Changes

Has your once-social loved one become distant and irritable? Are they avoiding phone calls or visits? Do they seem anxious or upset?

These are all the signs that they might be struggling with their mental health, especially depression. It is pretty common in old age when one doesn’t have anyone to talk to or has nothing to do all day long.

This can also be a sign of early dementia. If you notice these things, take precautionary measures and start visiting more often. This might be your chance to care for them as they did for you in your childhood.

    Summing Up

You love them, that’s why you’re here reading this. The signs may be subtle, but it’s essential for you to catch them before they take a bad turn.

Just trust your instincts and take the first step. Even the smallest of help early on can change everything for the better.
